"Abbott and Costello meet the Mummy" (English: "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy")  is a comedy horror film made by Universal International and released in 1955.

The film belongs to the classic Universal horror film series, and the name of the man turned into a mummy and the story of the princess's tomb are obvious references to the plots of the Mummy films released by the same studio.

The Mummy's Hand

Movie|1940

A couple of young, out-of-work archaeologists in Egypt discover evidence of the burial place of the ancient Egyptian princess Ananka. After receiving funding from an eccentric magician and his beautiful daughter, they set out into the desert only to be terrorized by a sinister high priest and the living mummy Kharis who are the guardians of Ananka’s tomb.

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello are two Americans stranded in the Egyptian capital Cairo. They accidentally hear Dr. Gustav Zoomer talking about the mummy of Clarice he found guarding the tomb of Princess Ara. The mummy also keeps a sacred medallion, which indicates the location of the treasure of the princess. The conversation is also overheard by Clarice's followers, led by Semu and Madame Rontru– a businesswoman eager to take possession of treasures.

Abbott and Costello go to the doctor's house to offer themselves as mummy escorts on their way to America. However, two Semu people, Iben and Khetsut, kill the doctor and steal the mummy shortly before the Americans arrive. Abbott and Costello find the locket they left behind and try to sell it. Rontru offers them $100, but Abbott suspects that the medallion is worth much more. He asks for $5,000, which Rontru agrees to pay. She suggests they meet at a cafe, where Abbott and Costello learn from the waiter that the locket is cursed. They desperately try to slip the locket to each other until it ends up in Costello's hamburger, which swallows it as a result. Rontru arrives and takes them to the doctor's office to look at the medallion through a fluoroscope. However, she is unable to read the hieroglyphic inscription on the medallion. Semu comes, posing as an archaeologist, reads the inscription on the medallion and offers to take everyone to the tomb of Princess Ara. Meanwhile, the followers of Semu bring Clarice back to life.

The whole company comes to the tomb, where Costello learns about Semu's plans to kill them all. Rontra captures Sema, and one of her people, Charlie, disguises himself as a mummy and enters the temple. Abbott also disguises himself as a mummy and, together with Costello, saves Sema. In the end, all three mummies end up in the same temple hall at the same time. The dynamite that Rontru intended to use to get to the treasure explodes, killing Clarice and opening the tomb with the princess' treasures.

Three criminals who wanted to steal the treasure are obviously arrested. Abbott and Costello convince Sema to turn the temple into a nightclub in order to preserve the legend of Clarice.

Phenomena in artwork: Zombies

The living dead here is the mummy Clarice, guarding the tomb and treasures of Princess Ara. Clarice is not dead in the usual sense: life in it has been maintained by the followers of the cult for 4 thousand years. The mummy not only lies in the sarcophagus, giving weak signs of life, but also independently gets out of it, moves and even attacks people. Clarice does not speak, only occasionally makes sounds similar to growling.

Clarice is not immortal. A mummy can be knocked out by a blow to the head, but it does not react to bullets. Clarice is killed by an explosion of dynamite, which he was holding in his hands.

Clarice keeps a medallion containing information about the location of the tomb of the princess. Legend has it that the medallion is cursed, but nothing is shown in the film confirming this information.
