Some sources (for example, the magazine "World of Fiction") indicate that for the first time in fiction, the great science fiction writer H. G. Wells spoke about parallel worlds. On July 14, 1906, in the London newspaper The Daily Chronicle, he published the story "The Door in the Wall" (sometimes found under the names "The Gate in the Wall" and "The Green Door").

The story in content and style of presentation is very similar to the real stories of eyewitnesses and stories about getting into some other, parallel world. The part of the story that describes the mysterious garden is related to fairy tales, for example, with "Alice in Wonderland".

It's interesting

Many believe that for the first time in fiction, the great science fiction writer H. G. Wells spoke about parallel worlds similar to ours in his story "The Door in the Wall" (sometimes found under the names "The Gate in the Wall" and "The Green Door", July 14, 1906).

The story is presented in the form of a story by a certain Wallace about his mysterious adventure, told by him to the author of the story. The work begins with the words: "One evening, a little less than three months ago, Lionel Wallace told me in a heart-to-heart conversation the story about the "door in the wall". "Wells did not believe him, but decided to retell his story to readers. Lionel Wallace began his story by saying that he constantly feels some kind of anxiety, it seems to him that he is being persecuted. It turned out that as a child, Wallace, left to himself (his mother died in childbirth, his father was busy with work, and his aunt did not really take care of him) went for a walk through the streets of East Kensington and found some door on a white wall. He was "five years and four months old" at that time. The door attracted him, and he decided to enter. There he discovered a mysterious garden in which there were ordinary animals and people. There he met two women, one of whom showed him a book describing his life and brought him back to his world. He found himself in front of the same white wall, but without a door. He was considered lost and returned home. The adults did not believe the boy.

He made an attempt to find that door only at the age of nine. On the way to school, he found this passage again, but, afraid of being late, did not enter it. At school, he blabbed about the enchanted garden to his classmate, and he blabbed to the rest of the students at school. The older students of the school also did not believe him and began to tease him. Wallace, to prove the truth of his words, led the guys to look for the door, but they could not find the place. As a result, the boys beat him up.

The next time he saw the green door was at the age of seventeen, when he was on his way to Oxford to take the entrance exam. He didn't stop the cab and drove past. He graduated, devoted himself to his career, became a member of the Council of Ministers, the head of one of the departments.

One day, when he was walking to the girl, he saw that door again, but again he was afraid of being late and did not open it. Since then, he has seen her three more times, but has never tried to enter. The realization that he had missed his chances made him very sad. He became distracted.

After some time, Wallace's body was found early in the morning in a deep pit near the station, where the railway line was being expanded.

Phenomena in artwork: Parallel world

That the main character went to a parallel world, nowhere in the text does not explicitly specify, so we don't know where it gets the boy. The characters call this place "the secret garden".

Wallace described a parallel world behind the door:

The air was inexpressibly intoxicating, giving a feeling of lightness, happiness and prosperity. It seemed as if the garden painted in watercolor – so pure, delicate, sophisticated and luminous colors he caressed the eye. He had only to get there and you at once I was overwhelmed with boundless joy in our world is granted to people only in rare moments of unclouded youth. Everything was fine…

The garden stretched to the horizon in all directions.

Also, the story describes the inhabitants of this wonderful garden. The first boy noticed two huge Panthers, who were playing with a ball. One of them approached the boy and poked his nose in his hand. Also there was a tall blond girl, who saw Wallace said, "there you are!"and then raised, kissed and led her away. Later they were joined by the monkey-Capuchin. He saw there an old man, parrots, and wild animals. All of them were different from what they were very happy to see him. He also met friends whom he, however, does not describe.

Then he met "strict dark-haired woman with a scowl on her pale face and dreamy eyes, long light purple robe with a book in his hands." She showed him the book, and in its pages he saw his life until falling into a parallel world. In the book the door was not, and after the kiss simply women he was in his own world in front of a solid white wall.

Interestingly, the door to this mysterious world has appeared not always, but only at certain points in the life of the protagonist (perhaps only when he was in a psychological state).
