Morbius is an American superhero film released in 2022.

The character of "Morbius the living vampire" was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane and first appeared in the comic book "The Amazing Spider-Man" #101 (October 1971).

In a Greek hospital, 10-year-old Michael Morbius meets Lucien, to whom he immediately gives the name Milo. They are connected by the same blood disease and the desire to be "normal". Their foster father and hospital director Nicholas arranges Michael to attend medical school in New York, continuing to take care of Milo.

25 years later, Michael publicly refuses the Nobel Prize for the development of artificial blood. Morbius' colleague and girlfriend Martin Bancroft learns that he has secretly brought dozens of vampire bats from Costa Rica in the hope of combining their genes with human ones to cure his disease. After informing Nicholas and Milo about the planned experiment, Michael receives funding to equip a private vessel on the high seas. The medicine helps to get rid of the disease, but turns Michael into a vampire. Morbius kills the crew members of the ship and sucks their blood, leaving only Martina alive. After quenching his thirst for blood, Michael regains consciousness, erases the CCTV footage, gives an SOS signal and jumps overboard.

Michael returns to New York and discovers that he has superhuman strength, speed, reflexes and echolocation abilities. He feeds on artificial blood, but it is becoming less effective. While FBI agents Simon Stroud and El Rodriguez investigate the cases of Michael's victims and draw conclusions about his involvement, Milo learns that Michael has been cured, and becomes enraged when the latter refuses to give him medicine. Michael visits Martina in the hospital, after which he runs into Stroud and Rodriguez, who want to interrogate him. At this time, a bloodless nurse is found in the hospital. Morbius tries to escape from the agents, but he is arrested on suspicion of murder. In prison, Michael is visited by Milo and offers to use his connections to free him. Realizing that Milo took his medicine and killed the nurse, Michael runs away to stop him. Milo confesses his crimes, claiming that he committed them out of a thirst for blood, and then urges Michael to accept his new identity. Not wanting to hurt his stepbrother, Morbius escapes.

The next day, Michael meets Martina, who has been discharged from the hospital, and explains to her that Milo is behind the murders in the city. Morbius finds a new laboratory and develops an anticoagulant capable of killing Milo; he also plans to use it on himself, realizing the impossibility of resisting the thirst for blood. Stroud and Rodriguez find a video of one of Milo's attacks and publish it in the media. Nicholas, who recognizes Milo on the recording, finds him and begs him to stop. Angered that Nicholas loves Michael more than him, Milo fatally wounds his foster father and forces him to call Morbius. Michael goes to Nicholas and witnesses his death, while Milo attacks Martina. Michael finds her too late, and she dies in his arms. During the fight with Milo, Michael summons an army of bats that help him immobilize his stepbrother while he injects him with an anticoagulant. With tears in his eyes, Milo dies, and Michael flies away with the bats, mourning his loved ones and accepting his vampire essence. Soon Martina comes to life and acquires the abilities of a vampire.

In the first scene after the credits, Adrian Tooms moves into the Morbius universe. He ends up in a prison cell and after a while he is released, since there is no information about his crimes in the database of the local police. In the second scene after the credits, Tooms, having received a copy of his flight suit and realizing that Spider-Man was involved in his transfer to this universe, finds Morbius and invites him to unite.

Phenomena in artwork: A vampire

The vampire shown in the film is not the living dead. This is an ordinary man (Dr. Michael Morbius) who becomes a vampire after trying to cure himself of a rare blood disease. He injects himself with a serum based on the genome of blood-feeding bats whose saliva contains a specific anticoagulant. After that, his body changes and he begins to feel a thirst for human blood.

Morbius has superpowers: after taking human blood (or its artificial substitute), he gains tremendous strength and endurance, uses echolocation and flies on air currents, becomes resistant to damage even when falling from a great height. The bats whose genes he used to create the medicine feel kinship with him and do not touch him, and even obey his mental orders.

Feeling thirsty, Morbius even looks like a bat: his face acquires animal features, fangs and claws grow. He begins to show aggression towards others. After drinking artificial blood, he gains the ability to control his condition, but its action lasts only for 6 hours, and with each new dose this period is shortened.

Morbius' friend, suffering from the same disease, acquires the same abilities after taking the serum, except for the "kinship" with bats. At the same time, in an ordinary laboratory mouse that received the same serum, such abilities do not appear.

Despite many signs of classic vampires, Morbius is not afraid of sunlight, holy water and other attributes. One of his victims becomes a vampire herself, but the reason for this is not disclosed in the film.
