Smoke from the devastating California wildfires has blanketed the globe. As a result, an ash ring formed around the sun over Deventer in the Netherlands.

According to photographer Peter Verschure, locals have been observing these rings since September 11. The reason for their appearance is very small particles in the upper atmosphere from wildfires in the United States.

These rings were first observed in 1883 after the eruption of the Indonesian SUPERVOLCANO Krakatau. They are caused by tiny particles of ash and dust the size of a micron (one millionth of a meter), scattering blue waves of sunlight. This phenomenon is often observed after volcanic eruptions, including modern ones, such as the 1991 eruption of mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. In this case, forest fires mimic volcanoes in terms of their impact on the atmosphere.
