Last week Marcella Giulia Pace from livinallongo del Col of the Col di Lana in Italy looked at the bright sun, and then turned away, squinting. To her surprise, she saw in the sky a luminous cross. Blinking didn't make him disappear. It was a rare kind of halo — Doug Wegener.
In the photo you can see a barely noticeable X-shaped arc crossed by Wegener bright prelicence circle. They intersect right over the top of the tree — at the point of the sky opposite where the sun is.
Wegener arcs appear when the sun's rays pass through ice crystals "pencil" shapes in the clouds. To form an arc, the solar beam must pass through one face of the crystal, be reflected internally from the ground, and then exit through another face that is tilted 60 degrees relative to the first. Not surprisingly, these arc — a rare phenomenon. Bright prelicence round is shaped differently — the sun shines through the crystals of another form, resembling a plate. It is also uncommon, but definitely not comparable with the Wegener arc. Anyway, this picture is really big luck!
