Astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell managed to identify a mysterious object that was found in the American forest at the end of May. This is reported by the Daily Mail.
A charred metal panel about a meter wide, with a tattered carbon fiber sticking out of it, was found on a forest trail in North Carolina. The discovery was made by an employee of the nearby glamping, a luxury tourist camp.
Only McDowell managed to solve this mystery, whom the Daily Mail contacted for comment. The expert suggested that the object fell from space and is a fragment of the cargo block of the Crew Dragon spacecraft, which is produced by Elon Musk's SpaceX company.
According to McDowell, two similar wrecks were found in Canada and Australia. The trajectories of the fall of all three objects fit into his hypothesis. At the same time, the connection of the Canadian and Australian wreckage with Crew Dragon has already been confirmed.
In total, each of the Crew Dragon reusable ships is designed for 15 flights. SpaceX currently has four manned spacecraft and plans to build another one, which will make its first flight in 2025. The company is confident that this will be the last Crew Dragon built, as five such ships are enough to meet the needs of NASA.
In early March, it was reported that one of the Crew Dragon ships delivered cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin to the ISS. NASA astronauts Michael Barratt, Matthew Dominick and Jeanette Epps were on board with the Russian.
