The result is the persistence of large forest fires in California marked the emergence of the so-called pyrocumulus clouds. They reach a height of up to nine kilometers and in themselves are a serious obstacle to fighting fires.
Some call these clouds "apocalyptic", so threatening they look. The height of such formations is due to convection, as a result of which the air masses rush more intensively from the ground.
In comparison with the usual clouds, pyrocumulus clouds arise very quickly, as fires instantly evaporate from vegetation, moisture, and hot air raises it skyward with the smoke.
Similar clouds are often observed over the vents of active volcanoes, however, in this case, the ash colors them in dark brown tones.
