A dark, thin mass floating in the sky over the water in Sydney has puzzled people. This is reported by Yahoo News Australia.

An unusual sight in the sky over Sydney at the weekend has confused the masses, and many are wondering what it could be.

"Can someone explain to me what this is?" one TikTok user wrote on Sunday, after filming an unusual scene playing out in front of him.

In the video, some dark mass hovers in the air above the water, separate from other clouds.

A man from Sydney, who filmed this spectacle, suggested that it looks like "liquid metal", and believes that it is not a cloud at all.

The video has gathered thousands of comments from netizens. Some said the unusual mass resembled a UFO, while others said it was probably ordinary air pollution. Many compared him to the "dementor" from the movie "Harry Potter", similar to a dark soul gliding through the air.

But most came to the conclusion that this mass was actually a scud cloud. This type of cloud forms at a low altitude above the ground. It is usually isolated from other clouds and has an irregular shape.

"It happens because of the low humidity when there is a storm," one of them said. But others weren't so sure.

"I don't think it's a cloud," one replied. "I just Googled the scud cloud, scrolled through countless images, none of them looked like this," another agreed.

Martin Singh of Monash University agreed that "this is a really strange-looking formation," but he confirmed that it is indeed a scud cloud, also called a pannus.

"Sometimes these clouds form when rain evaporates below the main storm, humidifying the air and eventually leading to the formation of secondary clouds," he told Yahoo News Australia. "Under these conditions, they are not part of an organized updraft, and therefore they may look uneven."

Scud clouds, which are widespread, often have a "thin and broken appearance," he explained, but said what is shown in the video is "quite extreme."

Although the message was published on Sunday, most likely, a scud cloud appeared in the sky on Saturday evening after a severe thunderstorm swept over Sydney.
