El informe escrito de 13 de julio de 2008, Джиллом Стефко.

Original report written in July 13, 2008 by Jill Stefko

Five credible witnesses saw a UFO and one of its passengers on Presque Isle Park. Two women clearly saw a strange being. John Keel, respected paranormalist, investigated.

A glowing object landed on Erie’s Presque Isle Park deserted beach during the night of July 31, 1966, a few hundred feet from a car that was bogged down in the sand with five young people in it. The terrified witnesses, with no escape, watched. After the craft landed, they saw it send strange rays of light into the woods close by. A tall dark figure slowly moved awkwardly toward the car, adding to their terror. It scratched the vehicle’s roof, then left.

The witnesses reported the incident to the police. During the investigation the next day, large amounts of silicon and some cone-like indentations were found in the sand where the craft had landed. Presque Isle police vouched for the sincerity of the witnesses who were still very very scared when they reported the event. Many other Erie residents reported seeing bizarre lights or, as some would say, “UFOs,” in the sky that night.

Additional Comments by Paranormal Investigator Rick Fisher, 2010

… There was the incident at Presque Isle, on the shore of Lake Erie. In 1966, four teens were on a beach and their car got stuck in the sand, Fisher recounted. One went to get help. The remaining three saw a strange light in the sky, then a beam of light shining down and the lighted object descending nearby.

Two police officers arrived and the remaining male in the car offered to show the officers where the object landed. The two females stayed in the stuck car. Soon, Fisher related, the girls said a Bigfoot-looking creature approached and clawed at the car.

The girls hit the horn and flashed the lights. The creature ran off and the flying object quickly flew away.

The next morning, police returned and found scratches on the car, three-toed tracks leading to and away from the car and tripod-type impressions in the sand.

Decades later, a man claimed responsibility for what he said was a hoax. As a boy, he had released a hot-air balloon from his backyard in nearby Erie that had floated to the beach that night, he said. Yet, that doesn’t explain the marks in the sand, Fisher said. (Editor’s Note:… or the sighting of the creature). The force needed to create the impressions would have required a weight of 700 to 1,000 pounds, he said.

“I’m not here to tell you that it was a UFO, but I can tell you it was unexplained,” said Fisher. Sometimes people see things, but they don’t want to talk about it, he said.

We’ll start with the big one. I’m one of the many Baby Boomers who remembers a “saucer” sighting at Presque Isle State Park on July 31, 1966. Fifty years later in 2016, Sarah Grabski wrote a story for GoErie.com that reiterated the ‘Saucer’ sighting probed at Presque Isle story that appeared in the Erie Daily Times on Aug. 1, 1966. It detailed that more than a dozen people swear they saw an object land on the beach. Additional reports included sightings of an animal, a very large animal, that scratched a vehicle.

Here’s a snippet from the article: “Peninsula police this morning found numerous imprints in the sand in the Beach Six area, only 10 hours after a Jamestown, N.Y., girl was left hysterical after seeing something settle to earth 300 yards from the car in which she was sitting.”

The girl was identified in the 2016 article as Betty Jean Klem who said the craft also had a beam of light that lit up the area.  Grabski’s article noted that “police found impressions in the sand about 18 inches wide and six to eight inches deep that were around 300 to 400 yards from where the car was parked.”

The following day’s headline was “Air Force Launches Probe of Erie UFO” in the Erie Morning News on Aug. 2, 1966. Erie’s History and Memorabilia Facebook page includes a video that summarizes the event.

Flying saucer wannabes

Fascination with flying saucers has some regional roots in wannabes, as well. If you traveled Route 20 near Ashtabula for decades prior to 1999, you might remember a flying saucer service station that was built in 1966. It was a landmark and the idea man behind it, Ray Keyes, was an inventor and a builder. He had hoped it would become a museum item once he closed the station, but an article in the Ashtabula Star Beacon in 2006 says the landmark didn’t make it to museum status with the headline “’Flying Saucer’ crashes.” There’s a YouTube video that gives you a glimpse of it here.

Closer to home, if you’re searching for a flying saucer wannabe, look no further than the new Harborcreek Sewer Authority pumping station. As you can see from this photo taken by Jane Galbreath Cowell, it looks like a spaceship landed in the area.

Betty Jean Klem of Jamestown, New York had a very unusual experience at Presque Isle State Park on Sunday, July 31, 1966. Her boyfriend's car became stuck in the sand off of Beach 6 where they waited for help till after sunset. "We saw a star move. It got brighter. It would move fast, then dim. You could see it come down. It was metallic, sort of silvery. It landed between two trees. It came straight down. The car vibrated," said Klem in a report published in the Erie Morning News on August 1, 1966.

Klem also reported seeing a dark, featureless creature and hearing something walking on the roof of the car.

Betty's boyfriend, Douglas Tibbets, of Greenhurst, New York, witnessed the entire episode from the front seat of his car. He related his account to Peninsula Patrolmen Ralph E. Clark and Robert Loeb, Jr. when the officers responded to Tibbets and Klem's call for help.

"Air Force Launches Probe of Erie UFO." ran in the Erie Morning News on August 2. "Officials would not comment on the investigation except to say that all findings can be released only by the Secretary of the Air Force." The article went on to say "A test for radiation was made of the ground surface in the area of Beach 6 where the craft was said to have landed. But no sign of radiation was found by Erie County Civil Defense workers."

The Erie Daily Times reported that "Major William S. Hall, of Youngstown, went to the scene of the occurrences near Beach Six, where strange imprints were found in the sand in the morning hours after the events of the preceding night. The officer took plaster casts of some of the 'tracks.

"Five members of the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena joined in the investigation of reported landing of an unidentified flying object Sunday night on Beach 6 of Presque Isle State Park," reported Dick Ramsey in the Erie Morning News on August 3. The five members who came to Erie were Richard Hobbs, Joseph McGuire, James Reed, Jeffery Gow and James Sipprell.

In a separate report the Erie Daily Times reported that eight others had seen a UFO the night before the July 31st sighting at Presque Isle State Park between 8 p.m. and midnight. They included:

Stephanie Lupo
Helene Roche
Alain Orcel
Charoly Mango
Sue Karle
Linda Henderson
Janice Dickey
Jane Moran

Two girls also came forward and stated they had seen a UFO three months earlier. "Cheryl Coffi, who lived at the light house at Presque Isle State Park, told of the incident. She said, 'This probably has no connection with what happened last night.'"

Two police officers reported that they had watched a UFO for two hours before the sun rose on August 3. Lawrence Park patrolman William Rutledge spotted the UFO around 4:45 a.m. Wesleyville patrolman Donald Peck also saw the object, as reported the same day in the Erie Daily Times. A rash of sightings were reported in the Times the next day.

The headline in the Erie Morning News on August 5, declared, "Peninsula Ruled Safe After UFO Investigation."

There was a follow-up published in the Erie Morning News on August 12, 1966, which stated, "Monster A Bear? Park Chief Says No." Reporter Dick Ramsey wrote, "The Air Force report was released by the Air Force Office of Information at the Pentagon. Information officers said it is the final report on the alleged Peninsula sighting unless significantly new information concerning the sighting is supplied to the Air Force."
