Hay muchos casos locales que, a lo largo de los años de investigación de Ovnis, se han registrado, olvidado o simplemente ignorado. En muchos casos, esto está justificado. A veces, tal negligencia se debe a una difusión insuficiente o al conocimiento de que existe un caso, aunque hay muchas cosas interesantes que vale la pena pensar y recordar.
Esa es la situación del caso que investigué en abril de 1979. La única mención pública que conozco de él es un breve párrafo en la página 144 del libro de ray Fowler, the History of the UFO Explorer.
Ahora, mirando hacia atrás, veinte años después de que el informe del caso desapareciera en los archivos de MUFON sin previo aviso, los eventos de este caso se pueden ver de manera más amplia, aunque no todo se puede acordar en el acto. Vale la pena escribir sobre esto ahora.
El caso llamó la atención de ray Fowler gracias a sus conexiones con la policía estatal. Al parecer, recibieron un aviso de la policía local en el Viñedo de Marta, donde se produjo el avistamiento. Debido a que MUFON no tenía representación en el Condado de Duke, nadie en el área de Boston quería gastar tiempo y dinero para interrogar a un testigo, es decir, hasta que me ofrecí como voluntario, como lo hice en el ferry Vineyard el 7 de abril de 1979.
El 27 de marzo de 1979, Ed Brown (alias) (19 años), conducía hacia el Norte en Oak Bluffs por la estrecha Edgartown Oak Bluffs Road a aproximadamente 50 mph. Eran alrededor de las 22 horas y estaba escuchando a WRKO (680 kHz) cuando notó un brillo verde detrás de las dunas de arena a su derecha.
"¡Esa debe ser la gente en la playa que usa palos de luz!", se ha preguntado.
A medida que continuó, el brillo se intensificó y su Radio comenzó a captar el "zumbido de baja frecuencia". Se acercó al punto desde donde su vista estaba libre de dunas. Aparentemente, un cilindro verde brillante con extremos redondeados en contacto con el agua estaba a una distancia que luego estimamos de aproximadamente 200 pies (60 m).
Ed detuvo el auto con el motor en marcha y los faros encendidos. El objeto inmediatamente comenzó a elevarse lentamente, y Ed vio el movimiento del agua como si el objeto estuviera en el agua. Mientras continuaba observando, el objeto se elevó a tal altura, donde su vista estaba cubierta por el techo de la máquina. Luego, Ed salió del auto y se levantó del lado del conductor con la puerta abierta y las luces interiores encendidas.
La playa y el agua ahora estaban iluminados por la luz del objeto. El testigo continuó observando cómo el objeto se elevaba a una velocidad creciente durante unos segundos y decidió subir al auto detrás de una lámpara de cuarzo de 12 voltios que su padre usaba para inspeccionar cabañas despobladas durante la temporada baja.
Ed tenía la intención de dirigir esta luz hacia un objeto en ascenso, pero no pudo encenderla porque de repente descubrió que no podía mover nada más que su cabeza. ¿Fue esta parálisis causada por uno mismo o causada desde el exterior? Ed no podía decidir. Luego observó cómo el objeto desaparecía de la vista.
Al reproducir los eventos en la escena, pudimos rastrear el tiempo de todo el incidente en menos de dos minutos desde el brillo inicial hasta la desaparición del objeto. El objeto en sí estaba a la vista por menos de un minuto.
A Ed le pareció que todo tomó un poco más de tiempo. Estimó que el tiempo era de unos seis minutos. Inmediatamente se dirigió a la estación de policía de Oak Bluffs, donde descubrí que su informe se registró a las 10:30 pm.
El oficial de guardia recordó a Ed como inusualmente excitado y posiblemente asustado; inusualmente porque Ed era conocido por la policía como un policía auxiliar. Lo que dijo definitivamente no encajaba con el personaje.
Incluso con Ed tardando unos 10 minutos en llegar a la estación de policía, todavía había un lapso de tiempo entre su aparición a las 10 pm y el informe de la revista a las 10:30 pm.
Al día siguiente, Ed notó que su reloj de calendario mostraba el día correcto del mes (28). Durante el incidente, leyó tres días rápidamente (¡30!) y trabajó constantemente rápido. Ed no lo arregló debido a la cantidad de tiempo que tardó en adaptarse. Tendría que adelantarlo 29 días con un paso diario de 24 horas para exponer correctamente. Al menos durante el mes siguiente, el reloj mostró la hora exacta en lugar de correr rápido. Durante el estudio, el reloj no actuó sobre la brújula que se mantuvo cerca de ellos.
Entonces asumí que no podía haber suficiente tiempo para la reunión. Desde entonces, he aprendido que este no es necesariamente el caso. ¡Hay algunas reuniones que ocurren al instante! No voy a entrar en detalles sobre esta afirmación aquí, pero se basa en los datos de mi caso obtenidos en otras situaciones.
El aspecto más misterioso de este caso, entonces y hasta ahora, es el problema de la corrección del reloj. Debido a que la solución se notó a la mañana siguiente, sospecho la posibilidad de una reunión después de que Ed se retire durante la noche. Pero esto es solo una suposición aproximada que no explica nada sobre el mecanismo de corrección. Era un reloj Timex de cuerda manual de bajo costo. Si alguien que lea esto tiene una idea de cómo podría haber ocurrido una corrección de fecha similar, ¡háganoslo saber!

There are many local cases that, over the years of UFO investigation, have been filed, forgotten or just plain ignored. Many times that is justified. Sometimes that neglect is due to lack of circulation or knowledge that the case even exists even though there is much interesting material to think about and remember.
That’s the situation with a case I investigated in April, 1979. Its only public mention that I know of is a brief paragraph on page 144 of Ray Fowler’s “Casebook of a UFO Investigator”. Now, in retrospect, twenty years after the case report has disappeared into the MUFON files without further notice, the case events can be seen in an increased light of understanding, although not everything can be fit coherently in place. It’s worth writing about now.
The case came to Ray Fowler’s attention through his state police connections. Apparently, they had received the report from the local police on Martha’s Vineyard where the sighting occurred. Since MUFON had no representation in Duke’s County, no one in the Boston area wanted to take the time and expense to interview the witness; that is, until I volunteered and so was on the Vineyard ferry on April 7, 1979.
On March 27, 1979, Ed Brown (pseudonym), age 19, was traveling north to Oak Bluffs along the narrow Edgartown-Oak Bluffs Road at about 50 mph, It was about 10 p.m. and he was listening to WRKO (680KHZ) when he noticed a green glow behind the sand dunes on his right (see accompanying map). “It must be people on the beach using ‘light sticks’!”, he thought.
As he proceeded, the glow brightened and his radio began to pick up a “low frequency hum”. He reached a point where his view was unobstructed by dunes. Apparently in contact with the water, was a luminous green cylinder with rounded ends at a distance which we later estimated at about 200 feet.
Ed stopped his car with the engine still running and the headlights on. The object immediately began to rise slowly and Ed could see water motion as if the object had been in the water. As he continued to watch, the object rose to a height where sight of it was blocked by the car’s roof. Ed then got out of the car and stood by the driver’s side with the door open and the car’s interior light on.
The beach and water were now illuminated by the glow from the object. The witness continued watching the object rise with increasing speed for a few seconds and decided to reach into the car for a 12-volt quartz light which his father used for checking unoccupied cottages in the off season.
Ed intended to shine this light at the rising object but couldn’t turn it on for he suddenly found himself unable to move except for his head. Was this self induced paralysis or induced externally? Ed couldn’t decide. He then watched as the object rose out of sight.
Reenacting events at the site, we were able to time the entire incident as less then two minutes from the initial glow until the object disappeared. The object itself was in view for less than a minute.
To Ed, it seemed that things had taken quite a bit longer. He estimated six minutes. He immediately headed for the Oak Bluffs police station where I found his report logged at 10:30 p.m.. The officer on duty remembered Ed as unusually excited and possibly scared; unusual because Ed was known to the police as an auxiliary policeman. What he was saying was definitely out of character.
Even considering that it took Ed about 10 minutes to get to the police station, there still seemed to be a gap in time between his 10 p.m. sighting and his log report at 10:30 p.m..
The next day Ed noticed that his calendar watch was indicating the correct day of the month (28). At the time of the incident it was reading three days fast (30!) and had been running consistently fast. Ed had not corrected it because of the amount of time it took to adjust. He would have had to move it ahead 29 days in daily 24-hour increments to have it read correctly. For at least the next month, the watch kept accurate time instead of running fast. At the time of investigation the watch did not effect a compass held close to it.
I assumed then that there couldn’t have been enough time for an encounter to have taken place. I have since learned that this isn’t necessarily the case. There are some encounters that seem to take place instantaneously! I will not elaborate on that statement here, but it’s based on my case data developed in other situations.
The most puzzling aspect of this case then and still now is the watch correction issue. Since the correction was noticed the next morning, I suspect the possibility of an encounter after Ed retired for the night. But that is only rough conjecture and explains nothing about the correction mechanism. The watch was an inexpensive manually wound Timex. If anyone reading this has an idea of how a date correction like this could have happened, let us know!
