Eleven-year-old Tracy Lawson and her fourteen-year-old cousin Jackie Davis were playing in Tracy's backyard in the Rio Grande valley.
When they looked at the plowed field behind the yard, they noticed an unusual object standing 100 yards (90 m) from the quarry bordering the irrigation canal.
Tracy went into her home to get binoculars, through which she observed a "terrible-looking" black bird of extraordinary size, more than five feet (1.5 m) tall. Its wings were folded around its body, and the bird looked at the girls with large dark red eyes attached to a gray "gorilla-like" face. Its head was bald and its beak was at least six inches long, and it made a loud, high-pitched " Eee " sound.
The bird, or whatever it was that it had been lost to view for a few moments, reappeared in the northeast corner of the estate, its head sticking out over a small clump of trees.
The girls ran inside and told Tracy's father and mother, who didn't believe them. But the next day, Jackie's stepfather, Tom Waldon, discovered strange three-toed footprints, eight inches (20.32 cm) in diameter and square at the head, pressed into the solid ground by an inch and a half (3.81 cm).
Stan Lawson also noted how strange the family dog behaved. He was hiding in the booth all day, only leaving it for dinner when he crashed into the house and had to be pulled out.
That night, Lawson thought he heard large wings scraping against the bedroom window, but what caused the sound left no trace.

As they looked out on a plowed field beyond the yard they noticed an unusual object standing some 100 yards away, near a borrow pit bordering an irrigation canal. Tracey went inside her house to get field glasses, through which she observed a “horrible looking” black bird of extraordinary size, over five feet tall. Its wings were folded around its body, and the bird was staring at the girls through large, dark red eyes attached to a gray “gorilla-like” face. Its head was bald, and it had a beak at least six inches long, it made a loud, shrill “eeee” sound. The bird or whatever it was lost to view for a few moments, reappearing on the northeast corner of the property, its head poking above a small clump of trees. The girls fled inside and told Tracey’s mother and father, who did not believe them. But the next day Jackie’s stepfather, Tom Waldon, found strange tracks, three-toed, eight inches across, and square at the head, pressed an inch and a half into the hard ground. Stan Lawson also noted how oddly the family dog was behaving. It cowered inside the doghouse all day, leaving it only at suppertime, when it bolted into the house and had to be dragged out. That night Lawson thought he heard large wings scraping across the bedroom window, but whatever caused the sound left no trace of its passing.
