In 1879, a man named W. E. Howlett wrote:
"The Berkeley Square phenomenon will remain a mystery… There is at least one room in the house in which there is a harmful and unnatural atmosphere for both body and soul. A certain girl saw, heard and felt this evil in this room, and the girl lost her mind from it, and she never recovered.A man who did not believe in the paranormal dared to spend the night there. The next day, he was found dead on the floor after allegedly screaming hysterically for help. Rumors mention similar events in the mysterious room, events that led to insanity or death, or both.
The walls of the building seem "electric" when touched. Apart from an old pair of caretakers, the house is uninhabited. Even this couple does not have access to this room, which is kept under lock and key. The keys are in the possession of a mysterious and unknown person who comes every six months, locks the couple on the ground floor so they can have sex in the room..."

W roku 1872 ktoś napisał do pewnej gazety, czy można wierzyć w pogłoski mówiące o tym, że w domu straszy. Na tą wypowiedź odpowiedziało wiele czytelników i napływała niekończąca się liczba listów, które odpowiadały na pytanie. W roku 1879 niejaki W.E. Howlett napisał:
„Fenomen Berkeley Square pozostanie tajemnicą… Dom posiada co najmniej jeden pokój, w którym panuje szkodliwa i nienaturalna atmosfera zarówno dla ciała jak i duszy. Pewna dziewczyna widziała, słyszała i czuła te zło w tym pokoju, a to sprawiło, że dziewczyna postradała zmysły i już nie wyzdrowiała. Pewien mężczyzna, który nie wierzył w zjawiska paranormalne odważył się tam przenocować. Następnego dnia znaleziono go martwego na podłodze, po tym jak miał histerycznie wołać o pomoc. Pogłoski wspominają o podobnych zdarzeniach w tajemniczym pokoju,zdarzeniach, które kończyły się wariactwem lub śmiercią, albo obiema rzeczami.
Ściany budynku wydają się być „elektryczne” przy dotknięciu. Nie licząc starej pary dozorców, dom jest niezamieszkany. Nawet ta para nie ma dojścia do tego pokoju, który jest trzymany pod kluczem. Klucze są w posiadaniu tajemniczej i nieznanej osoby, która co sześć miesięcy przychodzi, zamyka małżonków na parterze i obcuje pomieszczeniu…”
