"The dungeon "(French:" Oubliette") is the eighth episode of the third season of the X – files series. The episode is of the "monster of the week" type and is not related to the main "mythology" of the series set in the first series.

In Seattle, assistant photographer Carl Wade watches as 15-year-old Amy Jacobs is photographed for a school Yearbook. He becomes obsessed with her and eventually kidnaps the girl. Her younger sister is the only witness to the kidnapping, which takes place in their bedroom in the middle of the night. Exactly at the same time, an employee of local café Lucy housholder loses consciousness due to bleeding from the nose.

FBI agent Fox Mulder investigates Amy's disappearance, caught up in the case because his younger sister Samantha was kidnapped under similar circumstances. The investigation leads Mulder to Lucy, who was also kidnapped from her own bedroom at the age of eight twenty-two years ago and kept in a dark basement for five years before she escaped.

Mulder's partner Dana Scully suspects that Lucy may be connected to Amy's disappearance. She makes this conclusion based on a long list of her criminal records and the fact that traces of blood were found on her clothes, the group of which matches that of Amy. As Lucy sleeps in her Dorm room, scratches appear on her face, and her vision temporarily disappears – injuries that mimic the condition of Amy, whom Wade tortures in the basement of his cabin. The girls have an inexplicable psychic connection: Lucy physically feels everything that happens to Amy.

Mulder tries to convince Lucy that she can help find Amy, but she is too scared. Scully informs Mulder of a new suspect, school photographer assistant Wade, who was recently fired under strange circumstances. Lucy recognizes Wade as the man who kidnapped her as a child and held her captive for years. Mulder is adamant that she is not an accessory to the kidnapping.

The investigation team receives a tip that Wade was seen near the place where Lucy was found many years ago. They find Wade's cabin in the woods near Easton, Washington, and find Lucy in the basement, unable to explain why she went there. Lucy starts to get cold and gets wet. Mulder, who guesses about Lucy's relationship with Amy, realizes that the kidnapped girl must be near the water. Mulder and Scully rush to the river and find Wade trying to drown Amy. Left with the police, Lucy begins to sink, despite not even being near the water. Mulder shoots Wade while Scully gives Amy CPR, but due to the girls ' connection, she revives Lucy instead of Amy. Amy is lying on the Bank of the river with no sign of life. Mulder continues to make attempts to resuscitate her, despite Scully's protests.

All of a sudden the process changes its direction to the opposite: Amy wakes up, and Lucy dies. Stunned by Lucy's sacrifice and his inability to save her, Mulder breaks down, sobbing over her body. He later tells Scully that he suspects that Lucy died not only to save Amy, but also to forget what Wade did to her.

Phenomena in artwork: Extrasensory perception

Between the kidnapped girl Amy and the former victim of the same maniac Lucy, who escaped from him 17 years ago, there is a strong connection that is not limited to the transmission of images and sensations. During the kidnapping, Lucy repeats the words that Amy hears from the kidnapper; she gets cold when Amy freezes, goes blind when she sits in a dark basement, wants to run away when Amy escapes. Lucy's body shows the same injuries as Amy's. The girl's nose bleeds during the abduction, and Lucy also has a nosebleed, and traces of the girl's blood are found on her clothes after that. Lucy begins to choke when the maniac starts drowning Amy, however, unlike the girl, does not survive. An autopsy finds 5 liters of water in her lungs, although she was in a car under the supervision of a police officer at the time of her death.
