On Sunday, 3 November, on the coast of the Baltic sea noticed an amazing phenomenon. Finnish beach Marjaniemi on Hailuoto island was covered with a carpet of white ice balls.
According to locals, the balls were shaped like eggs and created a frightening picture — it is like caviar of the sea monster that night came ashore to breed. The sunlight playing on the water and the frozen ice, added magic.
Photographer Risto Mattila captured the "ice eggs" and posted pictures on his Instagram. According to him, he lives by the sea more than 20 years, but still have not seen anything like it.
As explained by experts, this rare phenomenon occurs when a certain combination of several natural factors: wind, temperature and characteristics of the shoreline. The cold waves rolled on the sand, the water accumulates around the sand grains and freezes under the influence of wind. It is important that the wind blew at a certain speed — in still air water can form a normal smooth layer, but too strong will not allow the balls to form.
