Auroras most often green, sometimes red and rarely pink or blue. But on 19 November, the sky above the Norwegian city of Tromso was painted with rainbow colors! The tour guide Marianne Burghley took a picture of this magnificence.
"With nightfall, the activity was weak. Only after most of our group left, the heavens were alive and everywhere lit up the dancing lights. Miracles come to those who wait," said Burghley.
The colors of auroras are associated with specific atoms and molecules in the Earth's atmosphere. Green is due to the fact that the charged particles collide with oxygen atoms at altitudes of 100 to 200 km. also called Red oxygen atoms, but above 200 km, and nitrogen Molecules glow pink below 100 km, and ions of nitrogen are shining above 100 km.
Monday, November 19, cosmic particles activated atoms, ions and molecules at all altitudes, creating a full palette of colors.
