Restorers' surprises

Quite often on the web you can find references to strange details in art monuments that do not correspond to the era of their creation. Most often these are details of historical buildings - cathedrals, abbeys, etc. Here are two rather striking examples.

Astronaut (cosmonaut) on the relief decoration of the Cathedral of Salamanca

Salamanca Cathedral was built from the XVI to XVIII centuries. to replace the old one, which became small for the rapidly growing city. On its walls you can notice a bas-relief in the form of an astronaut in a spacesuit with characteristic relief boots. A photo with this astronaut is quite often found on various websites as proof of the reality of time travel, contact with extraterrestrial intelligence and other similar ideas.

"Alien" on the walls of a medieval abbey

Gargoyle, which is fixed on the walls of the abbey of the XIII century, located in Scotland, is very similar to the monster from the famous movie "Alien".

In articles proving the possibility of acquaintance of our ancestors with aliens, it is less common, but this is no less interesting.

Articles revealing the secrets of the origin of these interesting details on art objects have been flying around the whole world for a long time and more than once. The astronaut is a modern addition, which was made during the restoration of the cathedral in 1992, and the "Alien" was placed on the wall in 1991, when an almost complete reconstruction of the statues was carried out.

There are other similar, but less well-known sculptures.

Gremlin as Gargoyle of Bethlehem Chapel

The Bethlehem Chapel, located in the pride of Saint-Jean-de-Boiseau (France), was restored in 1995 with the participation of sculptor Jean-Louis Boistel. During the restoration of the tower, five types of chimeras were used, personifying 4 corners and a vertex. They echoed not only with classical Christian mythology, but also with the ideas of modernity. In the southwest, the gremlin settled, personifying the negative part of the human unconscious.

In the northeast, it is adjacent to the xenomorph, personifying Leviathan, a monster that should not wake up.

Darth Vader's Head sculpture at Washington Cathedral

The sculpture of Darth Vader's head is located on the outer pediment of the Washington Cathedral.

This is how the American boy Christopher Reader mocked the universal evil, who in the 80s became the winner of the children's architectural grotesque competition held by the Washington National Cathedral. Since then, Darth Vader's head has been flaunted on the cathedral - the way a child imagined it.

A cyclist from the time of the Dutch colony, carved on the wall of the Pura Maduwe Karang temple in Kubutambahan

Meduwe Karang Temple is a beautiful attraction in the north of Bali with some wonderful features. It is believed that this figure belongs to the Dutch artist, lithographer and ethnologist Weinand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp, who is also considered the first European artist to visit the island back in 1906.

Another cyclist, this time inside an ancient temple in India.

On July 21, 2018, Mohan Praveen, the host of the "Phenomenal Travel Videos" show on YouTube, posted a video on Facebook that allegedly depicts a 2000-year-old man riding a bicycle found inside an ancient temple in India.

Praveen claimed in a longer version of this video posted on his YouTube channel that this unusual find is puzzling because the modern bicycle was not invented until the 19th century, but the temple where the bicycle carving was found, the Panchavarnaswamy Temple, was built more than 2000 years ago.

But this was added in the 1920s when the temple was renovated.

"Perhaps the sculptor saw someone on a bicycle, was impressed by it and permanently imprinted it on the stone," says Dr. Kalaikovan.

An image of an ancient cell phone

This sculpture of a telephone was carved on the wall of the cathedral in 1996 during restoration work.

Aliens, Palencia Cathedral

Other figures hidden in the Palencia Cathedral at the door of San Juan are two aliens, widely known from the Ridley Scott film and created by G. R. Giger.

They were created during the restoration of the temple in 1995 by Carlos Clemente and Fernando Diaz-Pines, who received a license to place the figures there because they are big fans of comics and science fiction.

Why was this done? It's pretty simple.

According to the basic rules, various materials can be used for restoration, but they should only approach the materials from which the monument was created and be distinguishable from them. All newly added elements should stand out, and additions should be made in a modern style. So over the years, new elements appear on old buildings, often corresponding to the era of restoration. When restoring buildings, this applies most often to protruding parts - bas-reliefs, statues, gargoyles: they are the first to lose their appearance under the influence of the environment.

But why does a restorer use such images to restore historical buildings? It's hard to say. Someone considers it his personal signature, someone does it for a joke or to attract tourists, and someone wants to reflect some idea of the time when the building was built. For example, it is believed that an astronaut recalls medieval aspirations to travel into space and search for someone else's interference in the affairs of earthlings.
