Looking out the second floor window, Carol Luke and Ruth Passini (both 14) saw a glowing elliptical object, shimmering with light from white to red. He was the size of a Volkswagen, flying back and forth at low altitude over nearby fields.
After they watched him for half an hour (later they were warned by their mothers, who also looked at the UFO), they heard strange noises from the barn, about 50 feet (15.2 m) from the house, and the sound "put-put" as if the mower was running.
