At 1 a.m., a manufacturing worker was carrying two buckets of water to his garden in Claremont, New Hampshire, when he saw "a bright round object floating in a gentle arc low in the sky in the northeast." It looked like a full moon, but was at a very low altitude. The UFO disappeared behind the trees.

When the witness ran to his apartment, he checked the time. It was 01:12 on July 30, 1968.

Soon after, the surveyman and his wife went out after work in their garden of stones of the new house less than two miles from that factory's home. It was two o'clock in the morning when they saw a dome-shaped object. It was about 20 feet (6 m) wide and hovered at an altitude of about 10 feet (3 m) above the ground. They estimated his distance from them at 230 feet (69 m).

"The object was moving slowly, leaving shadows on the freshly cut lawn," the husband told NICAP. "These shadows created the effect of people's movement."

The UFO sent a beam of gray 20 feet (6 m) wide to the ground. Terrified witnesses said their children and dogs were very concerned.

"Our children were very restless," the wife said. "They moaned as if they were in pain. They were really crying in their sleep. Children sleep very quietly, and when they go to bed, they do not wake up unless they get sick. Our German Shepherd was whining and whining as if she were in pain. My poodle was very upset. He usually sleeps in our bedroom, and he's touched the edge of the bed with his paw until I put him to bed. He was really trembling with this disorder. As soon as the object left, both dogs calmed down and fell asleep. Most of all I was saddened by the fear for the children. I kept telling my husband what would happen to poor children if someone came to the house."

Both witnesses "felt isolated and scared. The husband wanted to go for help, but his wife did not let him go. Observers heard a shrill buzzing sound similar to that of a network transformer.

Minutes later, the facility moved about 25 feet (7.5 m) east and remained there until 4:30 a.m. At this time the buzz became "very loud." The light increased to "high intensity" and the UFO began to move westward and disappeared behind the trees. The sheepdog made a loud snick."

"During this time," my wife said, "I thought about all sorts of things. I hear noises all over the house all the time. Any other night they would have meant nothing, but today they were the worst."

As they watched the object, eyewitnesses saw a projection coming down from it.

"Our experience was very frightening and I hope it will never happen again," the wife concluded. "However, if this happens, I hope that by then my husband and I will be ready to resolve this issue better."

A few hours later, the husband reported the incident to Claremont Police Capt. Ernest M. Foss, who confirmed to John Meloni of the NICAP subcommittee in New Hampshire that the witness looked nervous and alarmed.

“Terrified” Witnesses Observe Near-Landing

At 1 a.m., a manufacturing plant worker was carrying two buckets of water toward his garden in Claremont, New Hampshire, when he saw “a bright round object float in a gentle arc low in the sky to the northeast.” It looked like a full moon but was at an extremely low altitude.

The UFO disappeared behind some trees. Running back into his apartment, the witness checked the time. It was 1:12 a.m., July 30, 1968.

Shortly thereafter, a land surveyor and his wife had retired after working in the rock garden of their new home less than two miles from the residence of the plant worker. It was 2 a.m. when they saw a dome-shaped object. It was about 20 feet wide and hovered approximately 10 feet above the ground. They estimated its distance from them at 230 feet.

“The object . . . was moving slowly, causing shadows on some freshly cut hay,” the husband reported to NICAP. “These shadows made effects of people moving.”

The UFO shone a 20-foot wide gray-colored beam of light onto the ground. The frightened witnesses said their children and dogs were highly disturbed.

“Our children . . . were very restless,” the wife stated. “They were moaning as if something was hurting them. . . . They were actually crying out in their sleep. The children are both very quiet sleepers and once they are in bed they do not wake up unless they are sick. . . . Our German shepherd . . . was . . . whimpering and whining as if something was hurting her. . . . My poodle . . . was most upset. He sleeps in our bedroom . . . and he pawed the side of the bed until I put him in bed with us. He was actually shaking from being so upset. As soon as the object left both dogs quieted down and went to sleep. . . . My fear for the children was what upset me most. I kept saying to my husband, what was going to happen to the poor children if someone should come to the house.”

Both witnesses “felt isolated and terrified.” The husband wanted to drive for help, but his wife refused to let him leave. The observers heard a high-pitched humming sound, like that of a utility pole transformer.

A few minutes later the object moved about 25 feet to the east and remained there until 4:30 a.m. At this time the humming sound grew “very loud.” The light brightened to “high intensity” and the UFO started moving to the west, clearing the trees and disappearing. The shepherd dog “whined loudly.”

“During this time,” the wife said, “I thought of all kinds of things. I keep hearing sounds throughout the house. Any other night they wouldn’t have meant a thing, but tonight they were most terrifying.”

While they were watching the object, the witnesses saw a projection from it descend toward the ground.

“Our experience was very terrifying and I hope that it never happens again,” the wife concluded. “However, if it should, I hope that my husband and I will be prepared by then to handle the matter in a better way. . . .”

Several hours later, the husband reported the incident to Claremont Police Captain Ernest M. Fausse, who confirmed to John Meloney, of NICAP’s New Hampshire Subcommittee, that the witness appeared nervous and apprehensive.

________________________________

Early on the morning of July 30, 1968, a couple (names on file at NICAP) finished working on their new house in the Robert’s Hill district of Claremont, New Hampshire and were preparing to retire.

Some lights in the field back of the house, apparently about 200 feet away, attracted their attention and they went to the window to see what was going on.

To their astonishment, they saw a dome-shaped object hovering about 10 feet off the ground. The underside of the object was illuminated, and the light covered an area about 20 feet in diameter on the ground.

Since they were in a fairly isolated area with no telephone (they had just moved into the house), the couple became frightened. They could hear a buzzing sound, like a transformer, coming from the object. The time was about 2:30 a.m.

Mr. and Mrs. John Meloney of the New Hampshire NICAP Subcommittee investigated the report in close cooperation with the Claremont police. In their interview with the couple, they learned that the UFO had remained over the field until about 4:30 a.m.

Then the humming became very loud, the light grew to high intensity and the UFO moved away at a low angle upward to the west and disappeared.

In the garage, the family dog whined loudly as the UFO departed.

Two separate groups of witnesses have been located by the Subcommittee. The reports seem to indicate beyond a reasonable doubt that something unexplained was in the area.
