From The Derry News. Thursday, October 4, 1973 An unexplained sighting of a UFO.

Several local residents and a motorist on bypass 28 reported seeing unidentified flying objects on Tuesday evening around 8:00 near rainbow lake.

An eyewitness *** from Spruce street in Manchester told police that he was driving along a bypass road when he saw a bright object hovering over Renbow lake in the sky. He went closer to investigate, and heard something crash into the lake.

Several people living near the lake were outdoors at the time and say two objects were moving in the air.

An eyewitness *** from Hilda Avenue saw the objects and described them as "whitish-yellow".

A mark Avenue resident, who asked not to be named, told police the items were "the size of a steering wheel." Other witnesses also said the objects were between two and three feet (0.6-0.9 m) in diameter, but some asked not to be named.

According to eyewitnesses, two objects went down to the lake. Then one of them fell straight and plopped into the water, creating ripples on the shore. The other flew up and disappeared.

The East Derry fire rescue team lowered a boat and searched the lake for two hours, but no trace of the fallen object was found.

The police received more than 40 calls about the appearance of UFOs. They assume that they were meteorites or military parachutists. The probability of marsh gas release was also considered.

Next week there was a continuation:

Thursday, October 11, 1973 UFO divers attack

At the request of chief ***, two divers descended into rainbow lake on Friday afternoon, trying to sort out reports of an unidentified flying object that three witnesses claimed fell into the lake on October 2.

The divers illuminated the muddy water of the lake with powerful searchlights, but their vision was impaired by the murky water and they could not see more than a few inches ahead at any time.

One of the divers said:

"The only way to get anything out of this lake is to drain it."

The chief of *** said that he does not plan to drain the bottom and considers the case closed.

UFO Divers Strike Out

At the request of Chief _______________, two divers descended into Rainbow Lake Friday afternoon in an attempt to resolve reports of an unidentified flying object that three witnesses claim splashed into the lake on Oct. 2. (My note: Ray Fowler talked to more than twenty witnesses later.)

The divers swept the silty lake water with powerful searchlights, but their vision was impaired by the murky water, and they could not see more than a few inches ahead at any time.

Said one of the divers, “The only way they’re going to get anything out of that lake is if they drag it.”

Chief ________ said he has no plans to drag the bottom and considers the matter closed.
