Farmer Mariano Gutierrez was working in his field one clear morning when he suddenly noticed the figure of an old man walking with a cane that seemed to appear out of nowhere in a remote part of the field.
When the stranger passed the witness, he did not look up and completely ignored Gutierrez as he greeted him.
Further along the field, other family members appeared and met the "old man", who also ignored them and continued on his way. After walking about 30 meters, there was a sudden loud noise, a cloud of dust seemed to rise around the stranger and cover him.
When the dust cleared, he was nowhere to be seen, and there was nowhere for him to hide in the area.
At the scene of the stranger's disappearance, witnesses found a hole 2 meters deep, but it was apparently empty. One of the younger members of the family was lowered down on a rope, and he did not see the old man, but saw what looked like a tunnel that went deep into one side of the pit.
Terrified, he begged to be picked up.

Further down the field other family members now appeared and encountered the “old man” who also ignored them and continued on his way. After walking for about 30 meters there was a sudden loud noise, a cloud of dust seemed to rise around the stranger and covered him. As the dust dissipated he was nowhere in sight and there was no place for him to hide in the area. At the site where the stranger had vanished the witnesses found a 2-meter deep hole, but it was apparently empty. One of the younger members of the family was lowered down with a rope and did not see the old man but did see what appeared to be a tunnel that disappeared deep into a side of the hole. Afraid he begged to be lifted up.

Dissolution (leaching) of certain rocks causes a number of phenomena which are called karst or, in a word, karst. They occur where the common soluble rocks: rock salt, gypsum, chalk, limestone, dolomite.
