Initial data
The missile combat team at the Minuteman II Intercontinental ballistic missile launch complex, owned by SAC from Ellsworth air force base, received an alert about possible interference with the launch complex and contacted security specialists upstairs to investigate.
A two-person emergency response team was dispatched and drove several miles to the launch site.
The written security procedure for all alarms was to stop within a quarter of a mile and conduct a visual reconnaissance. Before arriving a quarter of a mile away, the team detected a fiery orange red object above the launch pad.
Following their checklist, the team leader drove down the driveway while the team member followed the car to cover.
Then they noticed a "classic gray alien" standing with a stick in one hand behind the fence line. The team leader fired his m-16 rifle, and the Latter pointed the rod at him, releasing some kind of discharge, knocking him out of action. After that, the creature and object left the territory.
After an inspection of the nuclear warhead by air force technicians, it was discovered that the missile was modified, so it did not work.
This report was published almost verbatim in the National Inquirer, but attracted little attention.
During the same time period, there were numerous reports of UFOs flying and landing near Northern-level military installations, but South Dakota did not attract much attention, since it was not considered a Northern-level base like Minot air force base in North Dakota.
In the early ' 80s, a reporter from the Inquirer returned to continue the story with base personnel who may have known about the incident first-hand. Before the reporters arrived at the designated offices, the air force was told that if they had heard or seen this UFO report, they should remain silent.
