Initial data
Drove from home to Wrightwood, California, to work at George air force base in a two-door sedan with two employees, driving East on highway 18 between Ship Creek road and highway 395 near Phelan, California. I and other witnesses were F4-Phantom Weapons Control technicians in the US air force. My view to the East was of the mountains on the horizon with the first glow of sunrise behind the mountains.
The weather is calm and perfectly clear. The 1st large oval rises just beyond the mountains to the East of me. The movement is slow, hovering like a blimp or balloon. At first I thought it was a large airship with a mirror appearance, reflecting sunlight (the sun was below the Eastern horizon during the entire collision), the object was very bright, but had a clear oval shape.
After rising a few degrees above the mountains, the object stopped moving. The total time to climb was about 2 minutes. Then a second identical object began to rise to the left of the first object.
The second object moved identically to the first, then stopped next to the first at an equal height. Then a third identical-looking object began to rise to the right of the first object at the same slow speed, until it was at the same height as the other two objects. All three objects remained stationary for about 2 minutes.
A very curious sight at the time, but all the witnesses still considered the objects to be airships. Then the rightmost object begins to slowly rise above the others, stops completely, then moves from a full stop to a point just above the horizon almost directly South of us (visible from the right side of the car) in about 2 or 3 seconds. then it stops completely again. There was no acceleration or deceleration. Then the middle object does the same, stopping next to the other one above the southern horizon. Then the third object repeats the same maneuver.
When all 3 objects stopped hovering next to each other, all 3 objects slowly descended to the ground until they disappeared on the southern horizon. The objects maintained their exceptional brightness throughout the collision, even when they were near the southern horizon, where there was no sunlight reflecting in my direction.
All the witnesses agreed with each other not to talk about the sighting, both for fear of ridicule and because we were all ordered to talk about any potential UFO sightings ONLY to our commander.

Weather calm and completely clear. 1st large oval rises up from directly behind mountains due east from me. Motion is slow, floating like a blimp or balloon. At first I thought it was a large blimp with a mirror-like exterior reflecting the sunlight (sun was below the eastern horizon during the entire encounter), object was extremely bright, yet had a distinct oval outline. After rising a few degrees above mountains object stopped all motion. Total time to rise up was about 2 minutes. Second identical object then began to rise just to the left of the first object.
Second object moved identically to first, then stopped next to first at equal altitude. Third identical looking object then began to rise just to right of first object, at same slow rate, until it was at equal altitude with other 2 objects. Right-most object then begins to rise slowly above others, stops completely, then moves from a complete stop to a point slightly above the horizon almost directly due south of us (visible out the right side of the car) in about 2 or 3 seconds then comes to a complete stop again. No acceleration or deceleration was apparent. Middle object then does exactly the same, stopping next to the other above the southern horizon. Third object then repeats the same exact maneuver.

Objects retained their extreme brightness throughout the entire encounter, even when in a position near the southern horizon where there was no sunlight to reflect in my direction. All witnesses agreed with each other not to speak of the sighting due both to fear of ridicule, and due to the fact that all of us were under orders to speak of any potential UFO sightings ONLY to our commanding officer (to my knowledge all AF personnel, including myself and the witnesses, at the time were required to sign a statement acknowledging the order upon enlisting in the AF).
