USS Tuscaloosa traveled in formation with the aircraft carrier USS Midway and its battle group, which consisted of approximately 30 ships.
At this point, the USS Midway informed them and other ships in the battle group that they were tracking 5 unknown objects moving in a V formation off the coast of Russia, and the USS Midway had just detected them on its air search radar.
