Initial data
The nature of the ball lightning is still unsolved. This is a very rare phenomenon, it has not yet been possible to reproduce it in the laboratory. The dimensions of ball lightning can be from 1 cm to 27 meters. You can meet various assumptions about the nature of ball lightning, up to UFOs.
According to one hypothesis, ball lightning is powered by radio emission that occurs during lightning discharges. According to another version, it is a ball of plasma. However, scientists say that such an education cannot exist for a long time. Other experts claim that ball lightning is nothing more than the electroluminescence of air created by the excitation of nitrogen atoms. However, so far none of the hypotheses has found serious confirmation.
In the collection of meteorologist Valery Kalishev there is a curious case, the cause of which was a ball lightning. Moreover, it happened to his friend:
"On one of the summer weekends, they decided to go out into nature with the whole department," the Chelyabinsk resident said, "It was hot and sunny, everyone was swimming, sunbathing. In the afternoon, it began to rumble. Tents were urgently set up, things were put in them and back into the water. Suddenly a whirlwind swept by, rain poured down, a thunderstorm with lightning and thunder broke out overhead. Naturally, everyone rushed to the tents. A young girl, our technician, turned out to be with me.
We are sitting, waiting for the end of the thunderstorm. Suddenly we see something bright rolled down the central riser of the tent and hovered half a meter from the ground. Then there was a deafening explosion, and everything went dark…
I woke up from the fact that someone was shaking me by the shoulder.
"Are you alive?" - the voice was heard as if through thick gauze.
- Yes, put them on, - came from the other side.
When I came to myself a little, I realized that they were talking about us. It turned out that it was a ball lightning! The explosion blew the tent to shreds, my bra was torn off with my companion in one fell swoop - almost like in the movie "Diamond Hand", and I had only shreds left of my swimming trunks.
At work, when everything settled down, we were not only the center of attention, but also funny jokes, with the most incredible hints about our appearance."
Hypotheses
Ball lightning
A rare natural phenomenon, a unified physical theory of the origin and course of which has not been presented to date.
There are about 200 theories explaining the phenomenon, but none of them has received absolute recognition in the academic environment. Since this phenomenon was introduced into the scientific sphere by the English physician and researcher of electrical engineering William Snow Harris in 1843, and a scientist of the French Academy Francois Arago in 1855, many hypotheses were put forward. Here are selectively some of them:
