Ball lightning remains one of the most mysterious phenomena of nature. Since ancient times, it has excited the imagination of people. According to ancient Slavic beliefs, these fireballs are drops of sweat rolling down from the face of the angry god of thunder and lightning - Perun Svarozhich. And scientists still have not come to a consensus on how and why they arise. I happened to see the ball lightning up close enough to make sure that not all the miraculous properties attributed to it are a game of human imagination.

At the invitation of an old friend Viktor Leutin, I came to a small village located about a hundred kilometers from Ufa. It stands right on the bank of the Belaya River, and Victor swore that fishing here is downright royal. On the very first day, my friend and I, two other local guys, took fishing rods, fishing gear, other fishing gear, a supply of food, plunged into a motorboat and went to the cherished place. Two hours later we landed at a pier made of thick, gnarled planks on a deserted, overgrown with bushes shore. The places there are deserted - the only building turned out to be a rickety shed where we had to spend the night.

Fishing was really a success. Having caught twenty kilograms of fish, we were already looking forward to fish soup in the fresh air, but suddenly the sky frowned, and rare raindrops fell from the leaden-gray clouds. Cursing, they hastily gathered the gear and ran to the barn. We managed to make it on time: after a couple of minutes, the elements played out in earnest. The rain drummed fiercely on the roof of our shelter, and sharp gusts of wind showered us with water spray through the solid cracks in the walls. Thunder rumbled. It quickly got dark.

"It looks like the storm has been charging for a long time," Victor remarked. - We should at least light a lantern. Why sit in the dark?

He reached for his backpack, but at that moment two lightning bolts flashed near the shed at once. And then, in the semi-darkness, we saw a glowing ball hanging directly above our heads. Slightly crackling, it slowly descended along some kind of spiral trajectory. Numb, we watched him in amazement. I remember that the size of the ball was slightly larger than a football and a strong smell of ozone emanated from it. But we didn't feel any heat. Suddenly changing direction, the ball began to move to the corner where the gear lay. He touched a metal box with spare fishing lines and hooks, hissed and jumped up again. Victor, whose body was apparently numb from the uncomfortable pose, moved, sighed, and the lightning, as if attracted by his movements, smoothly glided right on his head. The guys screamed, and the fireball burst with a bang and scattered sparks...

Having thrown things in the shed, we grabbed Viktor lying motionless and took him by boat to the hospital of the district center. Fortunately, already in the emergency department, he woke up and spoke to us. The doctors who examined my friend came to the conclusion that his leather cap saved him. Lightning burned through her, but her head remained intact. However, a perfectly smooth circle of gray hair appeared on the top of Victor's head. He did not disappear even after the haircut to zero.

Later, Leutin said that he did not lose consciousness - he clearly saw us and heard voices. But it seemed to him that we were moving and talking, as if in slow motion. After the collision with the ball lightning, he began to stutter slightly, but he has no other health disorders.

Yes, when we returned to the barn for our gear and fish, we found that all the hooks had melted in the box on which the fireball had dived. And the plastic boxes in which they were lying, and the coils of fishing line remained completely intact. And one more thing: among the groceries in Victor's backpack were several raw eggs wrapped in newspaper. They were all empty-one shell, but without a single crack.

Ball lightning

A rare natural phenomenon, a unified physical theory of the origin and course of which has not been presented to date.

There are about 200 theories explaining the phenomenon, but none of them has received absolute recognition in the academic environment. Since this phenomenon was introduced into the scientific sphere by the English physician and researcher of electrical engineering William Snow Harris in 1843, and a scientist of the French Academy Francois Arago in 1855, many hypotheses were put forward. Here are selectively some of them:
