Uruguay: a skeptical look at the classic UFO CE-2
MONTEVIDEO, Oct. 1 (EFE). According to the latest book by Uruguayan mathematician Eduardo Cuitinho, the strange phenomena that played out in 1977 in rural Uruguay, which until now have been attributed to supernatural causes, such as unidentified flying objects or alien creatures, can be explained from a scientific point of view.
In his book "Estancia La Aurora", the Uruguayan author tries to "sort out the legend in some way" about a rural property located in the province of Paysandu in northwestern Uruguay, where, as the author explained to EFE, several alleged UFO events occurred.
One night in February 1977, a legend arose that, according to Cuitinho, "was a great UFO event in Uruguay," as it was accompanied by a "strange light event" that left behind burns on several animals in the territory and a circle burned on the ground.
The supposed mysticism of this place attracts hundreds of visitors every week, and it is a place of pilgrimage for both local and foreign visitors seeking to benefit from contact with supposed aliens or supernatural forces they believe in.
However, the position of this Uruguayan author is that such events can be explained by certain natural conditions attributed to La Aurora.
The mathematician claims that "people are most likely confusing a natural phenomenon with what they want to believe," and his book suggests that the actual cause of the legend was lightning, given the thunderstorm that broke out that night.
Cuitinho told EFE that his book aims at an "unbiased analysis" of the events that some believers attribute to the monstrous chupacabras, and added that, in addition to eyewitness accounts, he provides "logical explanations based on concepts of geology and physics" that provide a rational justification for these superstitions.
The book appeared as a result of a statement made by a student of one of the classes he teaches. The young woman said that her grandfather was "abducted by aliens" near Aurora, where luminous and magnetic phenomena really occur, which, in his opinion, "can be investigated from a scientific point of view."
For example, "this is the only place in Uruguay" where "meditation takes place under high-voltage wires," explaining that their influence on these actions can cause hallucinations.
The essay, which examines these events through eyewitness accounts of believers, scientists and the media, "is a journalistic book that discusses what is happening and is happening" on this Uruguayan ranch.
The book was presented at the 39th International Book Fair in Uruguay, which was held until October 10 in the Intendancy of Montevideo.
