Steve Woodman, 45, from Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire, was returning from work around 1am when he came across a huge black cat. The stunned driver noticed a "big muscular cat" while waiting for a traffic light.
Although he was once skeptical of big beasts, he believes big cats are real after meeting one of the elusive British beasts.
Having stopped at some temporary traffic light, a 45-year-old man found himself face to face with a monster, excluding pets, as it was quite "tall" and "muscular".
Speaking about the meeting, Steve said:
"I was driving home from work on Westington Hill at about one o'clock in the morning. I stopped at the temporary traffic lights that were there at the time and wished they would hurry up and turn green. Then I saw something on the left side and realized that it was a big black cat. I didn't even think it could be anything else. It definitely wasn't a deer, or a dog, or a house cat, it was a big black cat.
He was as tall as the headlights of my Land Rover Freelander, and also quite muscular. Then he ran after the car, right across the road, and disappeared.The light turned red, and I hesitated whether to turn around and go look for him. I decided it was better to go home and go to bed."
Steve has since revealed that this meeting dispelled his skepticism about whether huge black cats roam the streets of the UK.
He added:
"When I first saw it, I thought: "My God, what is this." However, when you see a fox, you know it's a fox, when you see a dog, you know it's a cat. I was skeptical that a big cat lives somewhere in the Gloucestershire countryside, but now I've seen one, I know it's there. A man driving home late at night in the Cotswolds says he saw a big cat which was as tall as the lights on his Land Rover Freelander while he was sat waiting for traffic lights to switch to green. He only saw the creature for a fleeting moment as he watched the animal, from his wing mirror, run behind the car and disappear.
Steve Woodman, 45 from Chipping Campden was on his way back from work at around 1am on Monday (May 15) when he saw the big black cat. Steve who was once a sceptic regarding big cats living in the Gloucestershire countryside, says now he knows big cats are out there because he has seen one for himself.
Steve works as a night manager at a wedding venue. He said: “I was driving home after work down Westington Hill at around 1am.
“I stopped at the temporary traffic lights which were there then, and wishing for them to hurry up and turn green. Then from the left nearside I saw something and realised it was a big black cat.
“I did not think for a moment it could be anything else. It definitely was not a deer, or a dog or a domestic cat, it was a big black cat.
“It was as tall as the headlights on my Land Rover Freelander and it was also quite muscular. Then it ran behind the car, straight across the road and was gone.
“The lights turned red and I was in two minds whether to turn around and go look for it. I decided going home to bed instead was a much better option anyway.”
Steve says he does not often post on Facebook. However he decided to ask others who live in the area if they have come across any big cats.
He said: “When I first saw it, I was like ‘oh my gosh, what is that’. However when you see a fox, you know it is a fox, when you see a dog, you know it is a cat.
“I was sceptical about big cat being out there in the Gloucestershire countryside, but now I have seen one, I know one is out there. I had also seen a post on Facebook a little while ago from someone saying they had seen a big cat in the area.
“I do not post on Facebook very much but I decided to ask in a post if others had seen a big cat in the area and told them what I had seen. Some people commented to say they had seen it, and there were others making suggestions of what it could have been, but I know it was a big black cat and not a domestic one.
“Got to say, I always liked to think they do not live nearby. When you are going on a lovely Cotswold walk, you do not want to come across a big cat.”
