Initial data
Date: Tuesday, April 1, 2008
Time: 21:50
Location: Spray River, Blenheim, Saint Island.
Features/Characteristics: bright light illuminates the whole valley
Description:
The observation lasted approx. one hour. The night sky was clear.
The witness, a farmer from a remote farm, was at the intersection of the Waihopai and Spray Rivers. He noticed a strange light over the Spray River ravine at the end of the valley. Knowing that the light is not typical for a searchlight, the witness decided to come closer to try to find out what it was, and drove about 5 km along the 20-kilometer farm trail until he could get closer by car. He climbed to a vantage point to get a better view.
The light was approx. another 5 km up the valley. The farmer noticed a glowing area about one kilometer wide. The light shone down into the valley, illuminating it with bright flashes of light, which he described as "stars and light." These flashing lights illuminated the entire valley. The farmer sat and watched for 15 minutes. Because of the strange light, the farmer decided not to come any closer. He noticed that it was strange that as soon as he made the decision not to chase the light further up the valley, the light stopped flashing. He waited another 15 minutes, but the light did not resume. There was no sound associated with the sight or the light.
The farmer's wife and his neighbors saw this on three different occasions in February this year:
One of these observations was witnessed by their 31-year-old daughter, who was very frightened by this event.
One of their neighbors has a courier working in the area, and he was driving through the valley at 4 a.m. when he was momentarily "blinded" by a bright light. He assumed it was a flash of lightning until he heard similar experiences from other residents.
Two days later, the farmer's wife was sitting outside with a friend when they saw the same flash as described above illuminating the sky, again up the Spray River. The bright lights in the sky kept flashing for a good two hours. It happened two nights in a row.
The woman in the valley opened the curtains and watched the flashing lights until she fell asleep. There was no noise associated with these lights.
Another time during the day, the husband heard a very loud noise, similar to a rumble or explosion, coming up the Spray River. The dogs with him were barking furiously, but nothing could be seen.
Two members of this family encountered UFOs in the valley in 2005 (see 2005 observations).
Ufocus NZ comment:
The witnesses live a 30-minute drive from the Waihopai Spy Base for electronic surveillance and communication. Could these strange phenomena be related to a spy base, or UFO activity, or both at the same time?
Base position: New Zealand, Marlborough, Blenheim.
Longitude: 173 degrees 44' 20 inches.
Latitude: 41 degrees 34' 35 inches.

Description:
The sighting lasted approx. one hour. The night sky was clear.
The witness, a farmer on a remote farm, was at the Waihopai and Spray River conjunction. He observed a strange light up over the Spray River Gully towards the head of a valley. Knowing that the light was not typical of a spotlight, the witness decided to get closer to try to find out what it was, and traveled some 5 kms further up the 20 km farm track until he could go no closer by vehicle. He climbed to a vantage point to get a better view.
The light was approx. a further 5 kms up the valley. The farmer observed an area of light that he estimated to be approximately one kilometer wide. A light was shining downwards into the valley, lighting it up with bright flashes of light that he described as being like “stars and light”. These flashing lights lit up the entire valley. The farmer sat and watched for 15 minutes. Because of the strangeness of the light, the farmer decided against going any closer. He commented that it was strange that once he had made the decision not to pursue the light any further up the valley, the light stopped flashing. He waited for a further 15 minutes, but the light did not resume. There was no sound associated with the sighting or the light.
