Incident date:
02.05.2010 02:35
Location:
 Халкомб
New Zealand

Date: Sunday, May 2, 2010

Time: 2:35 a.m.

Location:  Halcombe (near Bulls), North Island.

Features/Characteristics:  flashing colored lights forming a triangular shape.

Description:

The viewing duration is approximately 20-25 minutes. Clear sky, stars, almost no wind.

The witness noticed a group of triangular-shaped flashing lights. The lights were flashing blue, green, red, yellow and white. The configuration of the lights circled from time to time and at some point seemed to approach the witness.

The lights were visible in the distance above the treetops, to the southwest.

Ufocus NZ Comment:

Biggs Mountain is located to the southwest of the witness position, however, judging by the aeronautical maps, Biggs Mountain does not seem high enough for barrage lights to be lit on it. If the witness's line of sight is extended to the southwest, it passes through the Ohakea Air Force Base, and a high hangar is currently being built there. Ohakea ATC has informed Ufocus NZ that a red emergency light is on at the top of a tall crane working on a new hangar. It is possible that the witness saw this light, and the change in the color of the light and the visibility of the movement could be caused by atmospheric refraction caused by the distance between the observer and the Ohakea Air Force Base.

Original news

Date: Sunday 2 May 2010

Time: 2.35 am

Location: Halcombe (near Bulls), North Island

Features/characteristics: flashing coloured lights forming triangular shape

Description:

Duration of sighting approx 20 to 25 minutes.  Clear sky, stars, little to no wind.

The witness observed a group of flashing lights that appeared to be a triangular shape.  The lights flashed blue, green, red, yellow/white.  The configuration of lights circled occasionally and appeared to move closer to the witness at one point.
The lights were viewed in the distance above treetop height, in the southwest.

Ufocus NZ comment: Mount Biggs is to the southwest of the witness’s position, however from aeronautical maps, Mount Biggs does not appear to be high enough to have any obstruction lights on at.  If the witness’s southwest line of sight is extended, it passes through Ohakea Air Force Base, and they are presently building a high hangar there.  Ohakea ATC advised Ufocus NZ there is a red hazard light on top of a tall crane working on the new hangar.  It is possible the witness saw that light, and the changing light colours and appearance of movement could be due to atmospheric refraction caused by the distance between the observer and Ohakea Air Force Base
