Yesterday, on February 1, I read a note in the "Labor" for January 30 about the observation of an extraordinary phenomenon from an airplane en route to Leningrad. The note indicates the time of the event (4 hours 10 minutes), but the date is not specified, and I did not immediately correlate what I read with the phenomenon I observed a few months ago.

However, analyzing the details noted by the newspaper during the day, and clarifying for myself in the evening on the map the dimensions of the said Pskov Lake, I gained confidence that the newspaper was talking about exactly the phenomenon that I happened to observe against the background of the night sky on September 7, 1984 at about 4 hours 10 minutes Moscow time.

Practical scientific work (I am a physicist, working at a research institute) convinced me that there are no "trifles" in the study of new phenomena, and therefore I will try to describe it in sufficient detail. I'm sorry if this bores you.

I have a "bad" (from the point of view of my wife) habit of getting up early. In any weather around 5 in the morning I walk my dog. She usually gets up only when she hears my footsteps. But on 7.9.84 she woke me up herself around 3-30 (for which I am very grateful to her now), which happens to her extremely rarely (for this I am also grateful to her).

At about 4-00 I left the house. It was a quiet, still warm summer night, the stars were shining brightly and the air was clean and transparent.

I live in a young town of the Leningrad region Pine Forest, surrounded by forest. our house is located on the northernmost outskirts of the city and immediately behind it, across the road, 50 meters away, the forest begins.

After admiring the starry sky for 102 minutes (I watched the northern part of the sky), I walked along the house in an easterly direction and turning towards the forest, I noticed a rather strong glow from the left side of the forest. So the full Moon could shine, but realizing that it could not be in the north, I turned around. For a few minutes I, as they say, stood rooted to the spot. It was a luminous disk (or sphere) 3 times larger than the lunar one. It had no clear boundary. this is what the moon looks like behind light cirrus clouds.

The disk was rapidly increasing in diameter. I thought to look at my watch. It was 4 hours and 10 minutes. The brightness of the visible disk was not uniform. Concentric circles of varying degrees of illumination (like a halo) and thin bright radial rays were viewed.

The picture was very dynamic. The radiation source was surrounded by a light misty formation resembling a white transparent cloud, which rapidly increased and at the same time became denser. After a few minutes, a dense white cloud completely hid the glowing body.

Illuminated as if from the inside, in the form of a regular sphere, the lower edge of which was hidden by the forest, it continued to rapidly increase in diameter. Its edges seemed to swirl, which increased the resemblance to a cloud. this is what low white clouds look like when a strong thunderstorm is approaching against the background of black clouds located above.

I could not estimate the distance to the milky-white rapidly growing and approaching sphere. The eye had nothing to fix its attention on. It seemed that it was about to begin to seep through the trees, and at the same time, rare small cumulus clouds moving from west to east were clearly visible against the whiteness.

At the very top of the sphere, I saw a fairly bright light source (Fig. 1) moving along with its edge in a southerly direction. The satellite observed from the Earth is moving at about this speed. the light source had a sharply defined border, was visible to me in the form of an ellipse, most of which was directed at an angle of 45 degrees to the horizon, and most of all it looked like an electric searchlight, although I did not see its beam. The minor axis of the luminous ellipse was decreasing quite quickly, as if the "spotlight" was turning away in the opposite direction from me. And highlighting for a moment the front part of the spherical formation disappeared from view. I watched him for probably only 20-30 seconds.

A few minutes after his disappearance, the edges of the huge sphere began to melt. The whole of it slowly darkened, became less dense, and soon a bluish glow began to be seen in its center, having the shape of a vertically elongated ellipse. After 10-15 minutes, the sphere "melted" completely. on the night sky, a huge spot shone with a bright blue light, representing a stable, rather symmetrical figure (Fig. 2) It seemed that through a hole in the dark night sky, a bright blue sky could be seen, as we observe it in clear weather. the border of the "spot" was slightly blurred, its brightness decreased from the center to the periphery. watching it for 10-15 minutes, I did not notice any changes in the shape or brightness of the glow.

I slowly walked around the house, the dog showed concern all this time, made a stand and growled in the direction of an incomprehensible phenomenon.

I didn't hear any sounds that could provoke the observed phenomenon, but it seems that the dog reacted to it. And when I saw the "spot" again, I noticed that it became less bright and became slightly elongated to the east. After another 20-25 minutes, it noticeably shifted to the east and took the shape shown in Fig. 3

the movement of the spot to the east was much slower than the movement of cumulus clouds, occasionally floating against the background of the blue spot. With that, I stopped watching.

On this day and in a number of subsequent ones, I harassed friends, acquaintances and colleagues both in Sosnovy Bor and in Leningrad with questions, but I did not find anyone who would have heard anything about this, in my view, a colossal phenomenon. Someone promised to check with friends at the Pulkovo Observatory, someone border guards (Pine Forest in the border zone), conducting round-the-clock surveillance, but I didn't find out anything. I was waiting for newspaper reports on this.

Knowing about the existence of your Commission, I tried (I agree that not vigorously enough) to find out the address, but to no avail, until a note appeared in Trud with your address, which I decided to use immediately.
