Engineer-physicist Trukhin Mikhail Mikhailovich writes to the Commission on the:

I read an article in the newspaper "Trud" for 30.01.85 and was struck by the amazing coincidence of the phenomenon described in it with what I witnessed myself, together with my friend Oleg Makarov.

By education, I am a fihic engineer and therefore immediately tried to find an explanation for what I saw, but I am not an expert in the field of atmospheric physics.

At the beginning of September, we were on agricultural work at the state farm "Syaglitsy" in the Volovsky district of the Leningrad region. Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact date when this event took place, but in my opinion, it was on the night of September 4th to 5th.

At 4 o'clock in the morning we left the barrack where we had spent the night, and went outside. I saw that in the direction due north, at an angle to the horizon of about 20 degrees, a large bright red dot was hanging. The night was starry and this point stood out well against the background of all the stars. There was only a forest in that direction and I was surprised where a searchlight could appear in the forest if it was not there during the day, but suddenly a ray fell from a point to the ground (very bright) and there were no changes for about a minute. I wanted to call Oleg Markov, but he ran up to me himself and shouted "Look!" the beam, like a fan, turned into a cone with a solution angle of about 30 degrees and it became so light around that we could see individual blades of grass on the ground.

At the same time, the point itself began to rise and move towards the camp. At 4-15, a second cone stood out from it. 3 concentric circles with indistinct borders began to diverge around it, but the border between the first and second cones was very sharply highlighted.

At 4-17, a third cone appeared and the point stopped at a height of about 70 degrees below the ool. Markov ran to the barracks for his friend. But while he was running, the dot began to shrink in size, fade and completely disappeared, but the cone and concentric circles remained.

Instead of a dot, a comma with a small short tail appeared. we waited until 4:30, there were no changes, and we returned to the barracks.

In the morning at 6 o'clock, instead of cones, circles, commas, dark clouds remained the same in shape, only instead of a comma, the cloud had the shape of an irregular quadrangle. I tried to reproduce all this from memory in the drawings.

We discussed all these events in the morning, but the camp commander told us that there is a military unit nearby that is currently conducting night exercises and firing signals with missiles. that was the end of it, but after reading the article by correspondent Vostrukhin, I got the impression that we were witnessing an extraordinary atmospheric phenomenon.

If my memories can be a little useful, I will be very happy, but I would like to get a comment from an atmospheric physicist.

I would have been skeptical about the article in the newspaper Trud, if not for the fact that I saw it with my own eyes, in about the same place, at the same time with two witnesses who can describe this phenomenon independently of me.
