Initial data
In another incident that year at the airport near Bishop's Stortford, which handles 27 million passengers annually, several pilots reported that their collision avoidance systems detected an object 500 feet below their plane as they were boarding.
The Essex Police report, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, says:
"Three planes reported that there was an object in their vicinity. An informant from the tower reported that two planes reported an object about 500 feet below them as they were coming in to land on Runway 22, the nearest of which was 20 km away.
They were approaching (two to three miles away) when their TCAS (Traffic Accident Prevention System) alerted them to something at an altitude of about 500 feet. None of the pilots saw anything when they looked."
