Digital Ethereal is a multimedia project in which designer Luis Hernan explores human interaction with electromagnetic signals, such as Wi-Fi, and tries to visualize this wireless technology that surrounds us every day.
As part of the project, the artist has developed a mobile application Kirlian Device, which translates Wi-Fi signals into a five - color heat map scheme, where red means stronger signals, and blue means weaker ones. With the help of this application, he created an amazing series of performances called Spirit Photographs.
To capture each fascinating photo, Hernan asked the subjects to wave their mobile phone in the air while the colors on the front of the phone changed from the app. He relied on long exposures to capture movement in space in a single still image.
The latest photos show colored rainbows that surround the ghostly forms with an energetic light pattern. The images seem eerie, as the ghostly forms in the center slowly open up to the viewer.
"I am intrigued by the fact that we are increasingly relying on what we do not see. I wanted to find a way to show the wireless connection that surrounds us, and also show how it is changing, " explains Hernan.
