A huge sinkhole opened up on a busy street in one of the largest cities of Japan Tuesday, November 8.

The sinkhole happened at around 5:15 a.m. local time in the centre of Fukuoka, the largest city on the island of Kyushu, in the metro area where there are more than 5 million people. By the end of the day, according to Japan Times, the funnel was 15 meters deep and 30 meters wide.

According to experts, the cause of the failure could be any of the factors: the recent rains in the region, renovation work in the adjacent metro or outdated sewage system in the country, which was built in the 1970-ies, and since then many pipes have not changed.
