Scientists have long known that our planet makes a strange low frequency rumble. It is indistinguishable to the human ear, but the instruments to measure seismic activity it catch.
According to the findings of French scientists, the hum occurs because ocean waves, which cause the planet to vibrate or "ring", as expressed by the researchers.
If you record the hum of the Earth, and then speed up playing it ten thousand times, you will hear something similar to "white noise" that occurs when switching TV channels, say the researchers.
Identify the waves that cause drone, scientists have helped the computer models of the ocean and seabed, as well as data on speeds and directions of winds. The researchers found that the collision of ocean waves cause some seismic activity, but "buzzes" the Earth to a greater degree due to collisions and due to the movement and pressure of the giant waves, slowly and methodically spreading to the bottom.
Microseismic activity caused giant ocean waves that penetrates deep into the earth's mantle and, possibly, extends to the very core. Scientists hope that thanks to the recording of this rumble, they will be able to make a more detailed picture of the internal structure of the Earth.
The results of the study were published in журналеGeophysical Research Letters in February of this year.
