The Incas believed that gods, spirits and long-dead ancestors could manifest on earth in the form of natural objects, such as mountain peaks (apu), rivers, springs, caves, rock outcrops and even stones of unusual shape.

These places were sometimes modified to emphasize unusual features, and were regarded as shrines with a special power to influence reality. They were known as waka (wak'a) and, in the case of stones, were taken for storage in palaces and tombs, sometimes even transported on military expeditions. People left offerings on huacas, especially seashells, fabrics, coca, jewelry, clay figurines, and were sacrificed, most often llamas and guinea pigs.

Quechua people traditionally believed that every object has a physical presence and two kamakens (spirits), one for its creation and the other for its movement. They invoked his spirits to make the object function. The Incas also believed that the tenth ruler of the Incas, Tupac Yupanqui, could talk to Huaca and thus know past and future events.
