Early in the morning of August 20, 1972, a strange object was seen for some time over Nogales (Arizona), which is located on the border between the United States and Mexico.
Several people saw the object and were interviewed, and it is likely that many others observed it. The case is ongoing, but enough information is currently available to present it here.
Helen Sutherlin, a public school teacher in Nogales, was woken by the "unearthly howl" of her white Samoyed dog, which was standing in the back yard of the house.
She lay in bed, watching the strange blue-silver light that illuminated the bedroom Windows. The dog continued to howl, so she went outside to see what happened.
Passing through the kitchen, she went to the side door, went out, and immediately felt a strange humming sound that sounded as if it came from above and from some distance away. When she looked up into the sky, she saw an oval-shaped light source that seemed to be the source of a cone of bluish-silver light washing over the main part of the city.
She described it as like a flashlight falling to the ground. It continued to blink and go out, and the light from the cars and roofs of the houses resembled a rainbow glow, as if they were elves emitting light.
Mrs Sutherlin estimated that the light flashed on and off eight to ten times, and she watched it for about 30 minutes.
When she came out, her dog calmed down, and during this time she could watch her closely. Although she can't specify the exact time, she said the kitchen clock showed 2: 30 at the time she looked at it.
After thirty minutes of watching, the lights in Nogales suddenly went out, and Mrs. Sutherlin got scared and went inside.
During an interview with Mr and Mrs Lorenzen, she said she was sure that many people had seen the object because before the power outage, she had seen a lot of lights coming on in previously dark homes in the area. She went back to bed and didn't try to watch any more.
Due to certain time elements in this case, it is highly likely that Sutherlin misread the clock, because the power outage she mentions occurred at approximately 3: 35 a.m.
The second main witness is a young (22 years old) Marco.
Flores, co-owner of the house and basement, a nightclub and restaurant for young people in Nogales. At one o'clock in the morning.
On the morning of the 20th, he closed it, and then spent an hour working on books so as not to "fall behind". A little after two o'clock in the morning, he went to a night restaurant, where he had Breakfast and talked with friends.
He left the restaurant shortly after 3 and drove to his apartment on Western Avenue. Then he undressed and sat on the edge of the bed, playing his guitar and looking out of the Southeast window. According to his estimate, it was about 3:20 or 3:30, and his air conditioning and lights were off.
Looking out the window, he saw all of Nogales, including Nogales, Sonora, Mexico in the dark.
At this time, Marco heard a buzzing sound that seemed to be above his apartment, and across Western Avenue, he saw a lighted area about 1/4 mile in diameter. It appeared to be moving from North to southwest.
It is important to note that the screens in the apartments in this complex are installed outside. The window was open, so Marco decided to unlock the screen and go outside instead of tripping over a darkened stove.
Outside, he looked at his apartment and saw a glowing circular object surrounded by a ring. Unfortunately, Marco is colorblind, so he doesn't give any description of the object's color, but he said it appeared metallic and its glow was reflected in the cloudy sky.
He estimated that he was traveling at 35 mph, was at an altitude of about 200-300 feet (60.9-91.4 m), and watched him for quite some time before he disappeared from view over a hill at the back of his apartment.
He noted that the illuminated area across Western Avenue was moving at the same speed as the object itself, and felt that they were somehow connected. The city lights came back on after the object disappeared from view.
Then Marco walked in and wondered if he should report it to the police.
About 10 minutes later, he heard an explosion, and the light, which had been dimming and getting brighter after the first power outage, went out. Marco went outside again and this time saw a lighted area in the sky to the North of the northeast (where the local power plant is located), opposite the direction in which the UFO disappeared.
He then called the local police and told them about the light in the North, and they informed him that the power plant had "exploded".
The next day, he reported an object that he had seen (the night before, he had hesitated for fear of the usual taunts), and they said that he was the only one who reported such an object.

She laid in bed watching a strange bluish-silver light which illuminated the curtains of the bedroom wi.ndow . The dog continued to howl so she went outside to see what was wrong. Going through the kitchen, she reached the side door, stepped out, and was immediately aware of a peculiar droning sound which sounded as though it came from above and from some distance. When she looked up into the sky she saw an oval – shaped light sour ce which appeared to be the source of a cone of bluish-silvery light which bathed the main section of the city. She descr ibed it as being like a flashlight shining down on the ground . It kept flashing on and off and the light from it ga ve cars and tops of houses a sort of irridescent glow as if they were thems elves giving off the light. Mrs. Sutherlin estimated that the light flashed on a nd off eight to ten times and that she watched it for approximately 30 minutes. Her dog had quieted down when she came out and she was able to observe it closely for that period of time. Although she cannot pin point the exact time, she said that the kitchen clock read 2 :30 at one time when she glanced at it but does not know if s he looked at when she came out of the house or when she re-encered it.
