Initial data
The liner was moving in intense blue-white light for 20-25 seconds, navigation devices are faulty (UFO II, Section III).
Captain Peter Telling, who was flying the Grand Commander at 10,000 feet above the Ohura Lighthouse area, thought he had a fire in the starboard engine. Its position in flight was 157° radially from the lighthouse.
About 30 yards away from the plane was a ball of intense bluish-white light, very similar to a welding arc, 20 to 20 feet (6x6 m) in diameter, which remained close to his plane for about 20 to 25 seconds.
The compass with automatic direction detection, as well as the gyroscopic and magnetic compass, failed and turned around at a speed of about 12 revolutions per minute. All directional equipment did not work until it flew over the Wanganui area.
The APD needle spun aimlessly, the magnetic compass spun (unreliably), and the needles spun several times at several revolutions per minute. VOR remained tied to the source.
Original news
Feb. 2, 1973; Ohura Beacon (area), Auckland, New Zealand
2:02 a.m. Intense blue-white light paced airliner for 20-25 seconds, navigation instruments malfunctioned (UFOE II, Section III). Table 1, 116,Captain Peter Telling, flying a Grand Commander aircraft at a altitude of 10,000 ft over the Ohura Beacon area thought he had a fire in his starboard engine. His flight position was 157° radial from Ohura Beacon. About 30 yards from the aircraft was a ball of intense bluish-white light, much like a welding arc, that was 20 to 20 feet in diameter, and stayed with his aircraft for about 20 to 25 sec. The Automatic Direction Finding Compass, and both the gyroscopic compass and magnetic one, went haywire and spun at a speed of about 12 revolutions per minute. All directional equipment remained non-functional until he passed over the Wanganui area. The ADF needle rotating aimlessly, the magnetic compass screwed up (not reliable) and needles rotated several rpm for some times. The VOR stayed locked on the source.
