Initial data
A short streak of light high in the sky (the deflected tip) was seen over the city of Heerlen (Limburg).

February 23, 2023, 21:44 European time/Amsterdam.
I was talking to my mom on the phone, went out on the balcony and saw a small strange short beam of light high/far in the sky.
It looked like a clipped toenail, too small to be the moon and too big to be a star or an airplane.
So what was it?
The sky is overcast, so I just checked the position of the moon in the stellarium. I thought it might be the moon, but it can't be because the moon is on the horizon?!
STRANGE OR WHAT?!
Maybe Mars, maybe something else?
Strange...
He disappeared behind a cloud.... it means exactly above the clouds.
The observation was in the Netherlands, much lower in the southern part.
The line of sight/direction is mainly to the west...
My best explanation for what I saw might be:
The plane rises into the sky and, perhaps, briefly illuminates the clouds!?
It could very well be a helicopter, but I don't think they go that high...
Most likely, they were seen very high above Maastricht Airport... maybe it was just a plane flying over the Netherlands towards America... or something like that... or England. .. Don't know...
He disappeared before I could take a picture of him...
Bye,
Skybuck.
The position and direction were improved by adding "impressions" from what they saw...

HEERLEN, LB — 23 feb 2023 om 21:44 european time/amsterdam.
I was with my mother on the phone and I walked to the balkony and I saw a small strange short beam of light high up/far away in the sky.
It looked like a clipped of toe nail, too small to be the moon, to big to be a star or a plane.
So what was it ?
The sky is clouded, so I just checked the position of the moon, in stellarium. I thought it might have been the moon, but it cannot be, because the moon is near the horizon ?!
STRANGE OR WHAT ?!
Maybe mars, maybe something else ?
Strange...
It disappeared behind a cloud.... so it's higher than clouds for sure.
The sighting was in the Netherlands, way below in the south part of it.
Line of sight/direction mostly towards the west...
My best explanation for what I saw might be:
A plane ascending into the sky and maybe shining it's light on the clouds, briefly !?
Very maybe helichopter but I don't think they go that high...
The sighting was most likely very high above Maastricht Airport... maybe just a jet flying over the Netherlands towards America... or something... or England... I don't know...
It disappeared before I could take a picture...
Bye for now,
Skybuck.
Position and direction improved, adding "impression" image of what I saw...
Hypotheses
Light sources on clouds
Lasers, searchlights, car headlights and other light sources of sufficient power can form a column of light in a dusty or foggy atmosphere, various patterns on low clouds, fog or haze. Also, the rays can highlight parts of the cloud, objects or birds, giving them bizarre shapes.
Searchlights can shine with one beam, several. They can be stationary, move, and also form spinning carousels on the clouds, which can change shape and color.
It often seems that the light source is located at the point where the beam hits the cloud, and not vice versa.
The heavenly bodies
The brightest heavenly bodies in the sky are Venus, Jupiter, and sometimes Mars and, of course, the Moon.
Venus is the bright yellow of the evening or morning star, shining in the sky on the background of evening or dawn. Maximum brightness of Venus can reach up to 4.3 m, and she is the third brightness of the sun in earth's sky after the sun and the moon. It so well reflects the light of the Sun that it is relatively easy to see and day, especially if you know the location. It manifests itself in the form of tiny blinking white dots.
Light (solar) pole
One of the most frequent types of halo, a visual phenomenon, an optical effect which is a vertical band of light stretching from the sun during sunset or sunrise.
